MAB Food Bank

About MAB Food Bank

The MAB Food Bank is a project of Islamic Circle of North America Canada (ICNA Canada) and proudly operated under the Muslim Association of Brantford (MAB).

Our mission is to serve families in need within the Brantford community with dignity, compassion, and transparency.

The food bank offers regular support to Muslim families, while also extending assistance to a significant number of non-Muslim families, based on available capacity and resources.

Supported entirely by community donations and dedicated volunteers, the MAB Food Bank provides:

  • Monthly food hampers (tailored to family size and dietary needs)
  • Emergency food assistance upon request
  • Culturally sensitive and halal-verified food options
  • Respectful, confidential service for all families

Registration Process

Families wishing to receive food assistance must register using the MAB Food Bank Intake Form (available online).

Required Documentation:

  • Valid photo ID for all household members
  • Proof of income (e.g., pay stubs, ODSP/OW, or bank statement)
  • Proof of address (driver’s license, utility bill, lease agreement)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must reside in Brantford or surrounding areas
  • Must demonstrate financial need
  • Only one registration per household

Food Collection & Inventory Management

MAB Food Bank manages multiple donation bins at three designated MAB locations. Bins are checked regularly (2–3 times per week) by assigned volunteers.

Process:

  • Donated items are carefully sorted; expired or damaged goods are immediately discarded.
  • Accepted items are transported to central storage.
  • Inventory is logged and managed using an organized tracking system (Excel or Google Sheets), recording:
    • Item name
    • Quantity
    • Cost
    • Expiry date
    • Volunteer name
    • Date of entry
  • The FIFO (First-In, First-Out) system is strictly applied to ensure freshness and minimize waste.

Food Packing System

Each month, food is packed into family-size hampers based on household size:

  • Small (1–2 persons)
  • Medium (3–5 persons)
  • Large (6+ persons)

Typical Hamper Contents:

  • Staples: rice, oil, lentils, canned goods, pasta
  • Essentials: tea, sugar, flour, hygiene items
  • Seasonal items: dates, socks, winter kits
  • Customized items (when available): baby formula, gluten-free products, senior-specific packages

Distribution Procedure

Food distribution usually takes place as per schedule, depending on food availability.

Distribution Guidelines:

  • Families receive a scheduled time slot via WhatsApp or phone.
  • Volunteers verify the recipient’s Family ID and obtain a signature on the Distribution Log.
  • A dedicated team of volunteers provides home delivery for seniors and families, ensuring privacy and dignity are maintained.

Volunteer Involvement

The MAB Food Bank thrives on volunteer support, with structured roles and clear responsibilities:

  • Bin collection team
  • Food sorting and packing team
  • Distribution day coordinators
  • Inventory managers

All volunteers receive proper training and orientation to ensure a respectful and efficient operation.
